On December 5, 2024, the National Ozone Focal Point Ms. Liana Ghahramanyan held a meeting with the 1st year students of the Master's program of the Faculty of Law, Yerevan State University under the subject "International Environmental Law".
During her presentation on "Ozone Layer Protection in Armenia," Liana Ghahramanyan discussed the role of the Ministry of Environment in managing public resources, the processes on the international arena, and the contribution of Armenia therein.
As a successful example of solving global environmental problems, the experience of Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol implementation and the efforts to restore the ozone layer were presented to the students during the meeting.
The students were interested in how the political situation could affect the implementation of the Montreal Protocol and the Vienna Convention, and the commitments made under them. Their questions were addressed during the Q&A session.
Additionally, the students were shown the project to improve the air conditioning system of the main building of Yerevan State University, which was carried out in 2022. As part of the project, 20 split air conditioners were dismantled, and a new energy-efficient cooling system was installed. The annual average energy savings of the new system compared to the old one amounts to 8,000 kWh.
This was the third similar meeting organized by Olympiya Geghamyan, the head of the Aida Iskoyan Ecological Law Research and Education Center and lecturer, PhD in Law.
It is worth noting that the "Ozone Layer Protection" program has been organizing regular meetings with students since 2005 to raise awareness on the topic.
