Protect Yourself: Posters and Labels on the Dangers of Ultraviolet Radiation
09.06.2025

Ahead of the summer 1,500 posters and 2,000 labels were developed jointly with the Ministry fo Health and printed in the framework of the "Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building" project, implemented by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The materials aim to raise parental awareness about the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and to promote the protection of children from sun exposure.

On June 9, 2025, a press conference was held at the "Armenpress" news agency's press hall. Participants included Liana Ghahramanyan, Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Environment and National Coordinator of the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol, Anahit Asatryan, Head of the Heliogeophysics and Radiology Department at the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center SNCO of the Ministry of Environment, and Ruben Grigoryan, Head of the Environmental Hygiene Department at the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention SNCO.

The experts highlighted the importance of raising public awareness about the harmful effects of UV radiation on human health. Ruben Grigoryan stressed that UV radiation, especially during sunny summer days, can severely impact health, particularly when individuals are exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods without proper protection.

Anahit Asatryan noted that the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center SNCO of the Ministry of Environment develops daily UV index maps, which are accessible here and at meteomonitoring.am.

In her speech, Liana Ghahramanyan emphasized that the posters aimed at informing parents about the dangers of intense UV radiation, particularly for children during the summer months. The materials highlight the need for protective measures and the critical role of the ozone layer in shielding against harmful UV rays. The posters will be distributed to all preschool educational institutions and primary healthcare facilities across the Republic of Armenia.

Additionally, as part of a public-private sector partnership, informational labels with similar content have been created through a participatory process. These labels will be provided to children's clothing manufacturers "Melante", "Alex Textile", "Momonik", and "Coco Baby" to be attached to their products.
